The Montaña Lab has broad interests within the fields of freshwater fish ecology, and community and evolutionary ecology. In particular, we are interested in understanding the mechanisms structuring ecological communities across spatial and temporal scales and quantifying such relationships. We use both natural and human-impacted freshwater ecosystems to investigates how environmental, historical, and anthropogenic factors influence community organization, food-web structure, and ecosystem functions.
We use fishes as model organisms to understand how communities are structured, altered, and can be restored. Our research program is field-based oriented and given the diversity of freshwater systems we work in, our research uses multiple integrative techniques (e.g., stoichiometry, stable isotopes, dietary analysis, morphological traits, null models) and combines descriptive, quantitative, and experimental approaches.
